How to Choose a Solar PPA Provider in the UK

Last updated 15 October 2026 · Figures indicative

Short answer: The best UK solar PPA provider for you combines secure long-term funding, a verifiable track record of operating commercial systems, transparent indexation and buy-out terms, a credible O&M plan, and MCS-certified installation partners. Compare at least three proposals on the same assumptions before signing a 15–25 year agreement.

Types of solar PPA provider

  • Funder-developers: fund, own and operate systems directly. Often prefer larger sites.
  • Installers with funding partners: design and install, with a third party funding and owning the asset.
  • Utilities and energy suppliers: may bundle solar with supply contracts.
  • Platforms and brokers: source and compare offers from several funders.

  • Pressure to sign quickly or pay a deposit for a "funded" scheme.
  • No named funder, or vague ownership of the system.
  • Generation forecasts well above regional norms.
  • No buy-out schedule or unclear termination fees.

How our matching service works

We assess your site's eligibility, then introduce you to PPA providers and MCS-certified installers suited to its size, sector and region. We don't fund, install or own systems. How we are paid will be set out transparently before you share any details with a provider.

Partner standards

We only introduce providers that can show committed funding, operating commercial references and MCS-certified installation partners, and that offer transparent buy-out and indexation terms.

Solar PPA provider FAQs

How many solar PPA providers operate in the UK?

There are dozens, ranging from large funder-developers and utilities to installers working with funding partners and broker platforms. Fewer focus on smaller commercial roofs, and appetite changes with interest rates, so the realistic shortlist for a given site is usually much smaller.

What happens if the provider goes bust?

The system and the PPA contract are assets with value, so they are normally sold or transferred to another owner, who continues to supply and maintain under the same terms. Check the contract's assignment clauses and whether the funder, not just the installer, is a party.

Should we use a broker or matching service?

A good intermediary saves time by approaching suitable funders and comparing offers like-for-like. Ask how they are paid, which providers they work with, and whether you can see all offers received. You can always approach providers directly too.
